CALLING OUT THE DOGS

If you're concerned about privacy on the Internet and want to take an active role in encouraging good online privacy policies, be a "Privacy Watchdog." It's easy and fun!

Using the Center for Democracy and Technology's new "Privacy Watchdog" web site, www.watchdog.cdt.org, you can learn what to watch out for and test the privacy policies on the sites you visit. This interactive program helps you evaluate how good a job the web site does of explaining how your personal information may be collected and used and what privacy controls it offers. And, based on that evaluation, you can send an automatic message to the web site congratulating it for a job well-done or suggesting improvements in how it handles privacy.

You can be an individual "Privacy Watchdog," or use this tool as part of an educational project, or even test your company's or organization's own web site to see how it rates.

As more and more people go online to shop, get information, or just communicate with each other, protecting personal information from unwanted or inappropriate use is becoming an increasingly important issue. It's up to the watchdogs out there to be on the alert and make their voices heard.
